HTC Vive site no longer taking orders in the United States

VR maker could be trying to keep the wait list down

The HTC Vive is now listed as "out of stock" in the United States on the VR headset’s official website, and a note to consumers says orders have been suspended "due to extraordinary demand."

Sales in other nations and regions appear not to be affected. U.S. customers can check a box to be notified when the unit is back in stock.

The hold could mean that HTC is in fact out of units in the U.S. market, or it could mean that it’s pressing pause on sales to keep the backorder list from growing too large, as Road to VR noted in first reporting the news.

The HTC Vive, developed by HTC and Valve, launched in early April. It encountered some pre-order problems due to processing credit card information from some financial institutions but otherwise seems to have been able to meet demand to date. Its competitor on PC, Oculus Rift, has had a tougher time meeting demand, including a component shortage that slowed shipment of the first wave of Rift orders.
