Capcom Predicts 100 Million New-Gen Consoles Sold in 2020

There will be more than 100 million new-generation consoles in the market in 2020, according to Resident Evil and Dead Rising publisher Capcom. CEO Kenzo Tsujimoto revealed the figure during a recent earnings Q&A session, the English translation of which was published on Capcom’s investor website today [PDF].

He said: "Our perception of the home video game market is that it will continue to be active at the global level, as we believe the install base of major home video game consoles will break the 100 million unit mark in 2020."

By "major home video game consoles," he is presumably referring to at least the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Nintendo will launch its next console, codenamed NX, in March 2017, while there are rumors that Sony and possibly Microsoft are also planning to come out with new hardware relatively soon.

Electronic Arts CFO Blake Jorgensen previously said there were around 55 million combined PS4 and Xbox One consoles in the market at the end of 2015. He recently predicted 25 million more would be sold globally by the end of 2016, bringing the new total to 80 million units.

Another recent report claimed there would be a total of 109 million combined PS4 and Xbox One consoles in the market by 2019, with Sony’s machine leading the way.

In other news about Capcom, the company has outlined a new development plan that focuses on "completeness," even if that results in a delay.
