Rumor: Two new Xbox One models coming, one with 4 times the power
According to sources from both Kotaku and Polygon, Microsoft is set to release two new models of the Xbox One as early as this year. When it was rumored that Sony would be releasing an upgraded version of the PlayStation 4 known as NEO, it caused Microsoft to push up development of their new Xbox One.
The sites report that both the Microsofts models will be revealed at E3. The first system is said to be coming in August and will be a slimmer model of the Xbox One. It will be 40% smaller than the current Xbox One and will include support for 4K along with a redesigned controller.
The second Xbox One console, which is currently known as codenamed Scorpio, is a much more powerful system boasting up to 4 times the current power of the Xbox One. It’s almost like a new system while still supporting the current platform which is Microsoft’s way of trying to catch up to the PlayStation 4. It’s said that Scorpio has the ability to run Oculus VR games; however, since Microsoft and Oculus aren’t on the best of terms at the moments, it’s not currently planned. But hey, those plans could change at any time.
So the question remains, how will this affect current Xbox One owners? Scorpio is set for launch possibly sometime in 2017, but will the new system limit users who don’t upgrade from playing new releases? We’ve heard that the PlayStation 4.5 will feature two different modes that will let current PlayStation 4 owners play every game without any issues since it will have a “base mode” option and a “neo mode option.”
We can only wait and see when Microsoft holds its E3 Media Conference on Monday, June 13th, for answers.
