Microsoft has put its plans to introduce TV DVR functionality on Xbox One “on hold.” A spokesperson for the company confirmed that in a statement to The Verge today.
“After careful consideration, we’ve decided to put development of DVR for Over-the-Air TV on hold to focus our attention on launching new, higher fan-requested gaming experiences across Xbox One and Windows 10,” the representative said. “We’re always listening to fan feedback and we look forward to bringing more requested experiences on Xbox One, Windows 10, and Xbox Live this year.”
Currently, the Xbox One allows users to watch live TV, but the system itself does not support recording functionality. Instead, that process is handled by your existing cable box.
During Gamescom last year, Microsoft announced that the free TV DVR functionality would launch in 2016. It was planned to work with the Xbox App SmartGlass app to allow users to schedule recordings on the go. It was also going to work with Windows 10, allowing you to watch your recordings on a PC or any other connected device.
Looking ahead to E3 2016, Microsoft is rumored to announce a slimmed-down Xbox One, and possibly some streaming devices, during its briefing at the show. Keep checking back with GameSpot in the days ahead for more on everything related to E3.
