The shift has been gradual, but steady – the Xbox One was unveiled as a media-first gaming console a few years back, but since then Microsoft has continually moved media further back on their priority list and games further forward. Case in point, the planned DVR functionality for the system, something discussed as recently as late last summer at Gamescom, has been scrapped.
“After careful consideration, we’ve decided to put development of DVR for over-the-air TV on hold to focus our attention on launching new, higher, fan-requested gaming experiences across Xbox One and Windows 10,” a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement to The Verge. “We’re always listening to fan feedback and we look forward to bringing more requested experiences on Xbox One, Windows 10 and Xbox Live this year.”
I was actually pretty excited about the feature, but the truth is, this makes more sense than keeping it. The feature only worked for over-the-air television and required an external hard drive for storage. It would’ve been used by a small percentage of users.
With this push away from media and toward gaming, I’m wondering if the rumored Xbox One revisions – a slim system and a more powerful system – will even bother with the second HDMI port that was such a core feature to the Xbox One at launch. It’d certainly be a way for Microsoft to shave a few bucks off the cost of the systems.
Either way, we’ll know more next week when Microsoft puts on their yearly E3 show on Monday, June 13.
