While we don’t yet know what the full price of the Xbox One Scorpio will be, it’s certainly going to be expensive. After all, the system is said to have 6 teraflops of performance and boasts native 4K gaming thanks to a semi-custom Polaris + Zen AMD SoC. With that kind of power, it is reasonable to assume the Scorpio will cost a ballpark $599. Thankfully, Microsoft wants to lessen the blow of such a hefty price tag with trade-in/trade up programs.
Speaking with The Daily Star, Xbox Services manager Dave McCarthy said that Microsoft wants to make the transition “as smooth as possible” for existing Xbox One users who want to buy a Scorpio. Microsoft will work closely with its retail partners in order to implement trade-in/trade-up programs across the board.
Currently, Xbox One owners can trade in their console at GameStop for $100 of store credit or $80 cash. This isn’t too bad, but we should keep in mind that the Xbox One S will arrive next month, meaning the price of trade-in offers for a vanilla Xbox One may drop considerably. Those who trade in the Xbox One S will get more of a return than those who trade in the original Xbox One.
With the Scorpio releasing in late 2017, it’s going to be a long time before we learn any concrete details about the system’s price and how much Xbox One owners will get when they trade in either current gen console (or even a PS4?).
Though there is still much ambiguity, it’s good to know that Microsoft is at least looking to be somewhat merciful to users’ wallets while at the same time trying to reassure gamers that buying an Xbox One in 2016 isn’t a bad investment.
