While Xbox One Topped PS4, 3DS Was Actually July’s Best-Selling System in the US – GameSpot

Ahead of today’s release of the monthly NPD report for July, Nintendo has shared a surprising fact from it: 3DS was the best-selling system in the United States last month, beating out both the PS4 and Xbox One.

The 3DS sold almost 80 percent more units in the US during July as compared with the same period in 2015, according to NPD data. Nintendo declined to share a specific number, however, which makes it hard to glean much from this.

Nintendo attributes this turnaround for the 3DS to the release of Monster Hunter Generations (July’s best-selling game), “continued momentum” following the 2DS price drop in May, and “widespread positive public reception” for Pokemon Go, which launched in July.

Pokemon game sales were also on the rise during the month. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire combined to sell over 80 percent more copies than in July 2015 despite being almost two years old, while 2013’s X and Y saw a sales increase of almost 200 percent year-over-year.

The company also noted that 2DS sales in the US have now surpassed 2 million units.

Last week, Microsoft announced that Xbox One was the best-selling console in the US during July. That broke a streak extending back to last October where the PS4 was the top-seller. The news came as a surprise after Microsoft announced two new consoles in June, one of which, the Xbox One S, was set to launch in early August.

We’ll have more from the NPD report when it’s released to the public later today.
