Guy Ritchie in talks to direct live-action Aladdin movie

A whole new world of smash cuts

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch director Guy Ritchie is reportedly in talks with Disney to direct a live-action adaptation of Aladdin, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Disney classic is based on the Arabic folk tale Aladdin and the Magic Lamp from a collection of stories in One Thousand and One Nights. Dubbed as a "street rat" in the film, Aladdin stumbles upon a magic lamp with a genie who can grant him three wishes. Both Robin Williams and Gilbert Gottfried landed one of their most iconic roles as Genie and Iago, respectively, in what was the highest grossing movie of 1992.

What sets this new version apart, however, is not just the jump from animation to flesh and blood — the studio intends to make it a non-linear movie, true to Guy Ritchie’s signature style. John August (Big Fish, Frankenweenie, Corpse Bride) is also confirmed to have written the script for the film. Sources say that the script will keep many musical elements of the original.

Aladdin is the third film announced for a live-action remake within the past two weeks. Earlier, we reported that both The Lion King and Mulan will be getting their own remakes as well. But Ritchie is no stranger to going back in time and creating his own adaptations — King Arthur will be released March 24, 2017.
