The Simpsons Does VR Couch Gag for 600th Episode

The 600th episode of The Simpsons aired last night and some people could watch it in virtual reality.

It was a Planet of the Apes parody called Planet of the Couches. You can watch it with the Google Spotlight Stories app (get it for iOS and Android). You will need the Google Cardboard headset to get the most immersive experience, but the app still offers a 360-degree viewing experience that’s pretty cool.

We won’t give it all away, but there is a sequence that show’s "Moe’s Cavern," while Comic Book Guy makes a silly jab at the VR movement, saying, "You do not know how stupid you look in those glasses." Be sure to move your phone (or head, if you have Google Cardboard) around to see everything that the extended couch gag has to offer.

In 2014, The Simpsons writers, including Matt Selman, tried out Oculus Rift. The Simpsons has already parodied virtual reality. The Season 9, Episode 12 episode "Bart Carny" sees the popular animated family visit a traveling carnival where one attraction is a virtual reality experience called "Yard Work Simulator."

The Simpsons has riffed on technology and gaming a number of times in the past. One episode parodied Apple (with a leader named "Steve Mobbs" and a product called the "MyPhone"), while another saw Marge become addicted to what was obviously a reference to World of Warcraft. The show has also cracked jokes about E3.

Episode 600 was the newest Treehouse of Horror Halloween special. Fox resurrected Frank Grimes, or Grimey as he liked to be called, for the episode, delivering his first line in almost 20 years.
