Some Mario Sports Superstars Amiibo Cards Use Art From Past Nintendo Games

First time ever for a Mario game.

UPDATE: Some of the art used on the upcoming Mario Sports Amiibo cards (seen below) has been repurposed from past Nintendo games, some as much as twelve years old.

As spotted by Reddit, the soccer-themed Bowser card is actually a reused image of Bowser breakdancing from Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix, the 2005 GameCube title.

Mario’s pitching pose, meanwhile, has come from a little more of a straightforward source – Wii baseball game, Mario Sports Sluggers:

It’s not the first time Nintendo’s used older art for a new product – last year, Mario Party: Star Rush grabbed its cover, seemingly, from a can of Spaghetti-Os. No, seriously.

All-new Amiibo cards will be available for the upcoming Mario Sports Superstars on the Nintendo 3DS.

These cards–which have previously been used in games like Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer–give unique in-game bonuses when activated manually. They are a way to provide some of the benefits of Nintendo’s collectible Amiibo figurines without owning them.

One free pack will be included with the game, after which subsequent blind packs will have to be purchased separately for $4.99. This is the first time collectible Amiibo cards have been released for a Mario game.

Mario Sports Superstars releases on March 24 and will feature a number of sports games featuring characters from the Mario universe, including soccer, tennis, golf, baseball, and horse racing.
