Nintendo kills Project Giant Robot

The experiment never got off the ground for Nintendo

Project Giant Robot, the Wii U game that languished for years, has finally been scrapped, according to Nintendo.

The game, which never had a full title, was shown only once, at E3 2014. It was demoed to press by Shigeru Miyamoto alongside two games that would eventually become Star Fox Zero and Star Fox Guard. In “Project Giant Robot,” you’d use the Wii U GamePad to control said giant robot, knocking over buildings and other foes as you tore through a city.

With Nintendo releasing its latest earnings report yesterday, Project Giant Robot was nowhere in sight. It still was being listed as upcoming as recently as Nintendo’s last Q3 earnings report.

When asked why the game had been scrapped, Nintendo told Polygon, “we made this decision after considering our overall product and development strategy.”

This comes after Nintendo confirmed in January that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild would be the last first-party, packaged title to come to Wii U, as the company fully pivots to the Switch console. Both launch on March 3.
