LG Electronics announces plans for new virtual reality headset

Prototype at GDC

LG Electronics plans to unveil its first virtual reality head-mounted display prototype at this year’s Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Valve announced today.

The headset will be shown off in Valve’s GDC booth and is, according to the Valve press release, “designed to deliver a high fidelity, next generation VR experience.”

We’ve reached out to LG for more details. Valve has declined to offer up any specs for the headset, saying only that it will be available for press demos this week.

LG plans, according to Valve, to spend the week meeting with developers to collect feedback and impressions as “part of its effort to define the first commercial units.”

Pricing, launch dates and territories will be announced at a later date.

The news comes on the tail of Sony announcing that it sold more than 900,000 PlayStation VR headsets and Oculus saying that more than 5 million Samsung Gear VR headsets are in consumers’ hands.

Neither HTC nor Valve have announced numbers for their HTC Vive headset.

We will update this story when LG responds.
