Hours ahead of other platforms, The Surge is now available through Steam. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of Deck13’s latest IP should be available at midnight, May 16.
The Surge is hosting a promotional sale for 10%-off on Steam even after its release, though the sale ends at 11:00 AM CST on May 16.
A catastrophic event has knocked you out during the first day on the job… you wake up equipped with a heavy-grade exoskeleton, in a destroyed section of the complex. Robots gone haywire, insane augmented co-workers and rogue AI – everything wants you dead.
Although The Surge has been referred to as the science fiction version of Dark Souls, the title promises much more than that. You’re able to target specific limbs or sections of your enemies and dismember them. After the fight, you’ll be able to loot and equip the limb you’ve severed. Furthermore, you can salvage your foe’s bodies to upgrade and craft new weapons and armors as you level up.
With many more equipment slots, you’ll probably spend plenty of time figuring out what’s right for you.
To continue separating itself from Dark Souls, the combat system in The Surge is more fast-paced with constant movement keeping you alive. From early play-tests, you can use shields to play more defensively, though they are sparsely found.
In addition, the enemies you’ll engage are erratic and hard to read, though less-so than Deck13’s Lords of the Fallen. That said, you’ll have the ability to dash away from awkward attack angles or subtly telegraphed movements, making it much easier to survive. When you first begin playing, take your time to find the right opportunities.
While most PC players should be able to run The Surge, the game is still fairly taxing. Here are the minimum and recommended specs:
