Regular Show creator has a new animated series — but it won’t be on Cartoon Network

Close Enough will premiere on TBS later this year

Regular Show creator J.G. Quintel is bringing his next animated series, Close Enough, to TBS later this year, the network confirmed this week.

Quintel isn’t a household name, but his enigmatic and unique Cartoon Network series Regular Show arrived at just the right time, garnering a large fanbase and making it one of the most beloved series on the network. Looking to do something a little off-kilter and try his hand at subject matter that simply couldn’t exist on Cartoon Network, Quintel took his new series, Close Enough, to a sister network (both are owned by Turner Network).

The show will follow a married couple as they try to deal with “juggling such everyday challenges as parenthood, friendship, ham theft, stripper clowns and choosing the right day care,” according to Deadline. The couple in question are transitioning from being twentysomethings to thirtysomethings, a popular premise for a number of comedies on television today.

It’s an interesting move for Quintel, but it makes sense for a network like TBS. Regular Show was able to cultivate an audience in its short time on the air and TBS wants to try and bring some of those younger viewers to its network. In a statement to Deadline, Brett Weitz, executive vice president of original programming, called out Quintel’s absurdist humor and ability to attract a live audience as one of the major reasons TBS was investing in Close Enough.

“J.G. hit the center of the demo target with Regular Show, and we’re counting on him to bring this younger and more engaged audience to our network,” Weitz said.

Close Enough doesn’t have a premiere date at this time, but it is expected to make its debut later this fall.
