Metro: Exodus is a new open-world shooter that takes the series above-ground

4A Games moves forward with its popular franchise

4A Games took the stage at Microsoft’s E3 2017 media briefing to reveal Metro: Exodus, a return to its popular post-apocalyptic shooter series.

The reveal trailer showed off a dilapidated underground setting, makeshift weaponry and giant mutated rat and bear creatures — all elements that will be familiar to fans of the previous two games in the series. But it also included a moment of surprising beauty, where the main character looked out over an abandoned town and the wilderness surrounding it.

This moment led to the biggest surprise of the new game: It appears to be at least somewhat an open-world game. Though well-liked, the previous Metro games were primarily extremely linear in their design.

The last Metro game, Metro: Last Light, came out in 2013 for last-gen consoles. An update for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One arrived a year later. Metro: Exodus is planned for release on Xbox One and PC in 2018. No other platforms have been revealed at this time.
