FIFA 18 Release Date and Pre-order Info – Cover Athlete Cristiano Ronaldo

On June 5, EA announced that the FIFA 18 release date is September 29, 2017. FIFA 18 will release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and the Nintendo Switch. Cristiano Ronaldo was revealed to be the cover athlete for FIFA 18, in the trailer we’ve embedded for you below.

Cristiano Ronaldo is now widely regarded as the greatest footballer of the modern era. Currently playing for Real Madrid, but with rumours circulating about a move back to Manchester United (the club that made him famous), he’s the best choice for FIFA 18’s cover star.

FIFA 18 Ultimate Team Icons

New to FIFA 18 is FIFA 18 Ultimate Team Icons, the new version of what has previously been called Legends. EA will be including numerous iconic players from football history, which FIFA 18 players will be able to use in Ultimate Team.

Announced FIFA 18 Icons

  • Ronaldo Nazári – Ronaldo’s pace and finishing made him a three-time Ballon d’Or winner. The Brazilian’s move to Real Madrid from Italy made him one of club’s galácticos.
  • Diego Maradona – Although perhaps now infamous for his ‘Hand of God’ goal that put England out of the 1986 FIFA World Cup (the other goal he scored in that game is remembered for better reasons), Maradona is one of the greatest dribblers of all time.
  • Thierry Henry – One of the Premier League’s all-time greats and an Arsenal legend, Henry won the Golden Boot four times. He won the FIFA World Cup with France in 1998.
  • Lev Yashin – Regarded as the greatest goalkeeper of all time, Yahin earned the nickname “Black Spider”. He spent 20 years at Dynamo Moscow, making 270 clean sheets and saving over 150 penalties.
  • Pelé – Known as one of the greatest footballers of all time, Pelé won three World Cups, scoring more goals for Brazil than any other player in history. There’s a reason Pelé is a household name.

More FIFA 18 Icons will be announced in the months leading up to FIFA 18’s release date.

E3 2017 FIFA 18 Trailer, Story Mode (The Journey, Alex Hunter Returns), Gameplay Improvements

EA showed off FIFA 18 at its EA Play conference just before E3 2017. The game is focusing on a handful of ideas this year, with player styles and atmospheres being the most prominent. Players now display more characteristic moves than ever before, while stadiums more accurately reflect reality.

A brand new trailer for FIFA 18’s story mode, The Journey: Hunter Returns, was also revealed. The Journey: Hunter Returns in FIFA 18 will continue the story of Alex Hunter, following his successful first year in which he won the FA Cup.

As well as showing off Hunter Returns, a new gameplay trailer showed off FIFA 18’s new animations and improved visuals.

FIFA 18 Gameplay Improvements and Changes

  • New Cross System – FIFA 18 does away with the multiple press system of old and replaces it with holding down triggers to determine the cross type.
  • In-play Substitutions – Brand new to FIFA 18 is the ability to make substitutions during replays, meaning you don’t need to break up the flow of the game as much as before. You’re able to make custom or suggestion subs without a break in the action, which is pretty cool.
  • Hard Tackle – Not a big deal to some, but potentially massive for others, FIFA 18 now includes a hard tackle button. This is a middle option between a sliding tackle and a standing tackle.
  • Penalties Made Easier – Penalties in FIFA 18 are reportedly more forgiving, although we’ll have to play it ourselves to say for sure.

You can see some of the gameplay improvements in the FIFA 18 gameplay video we’ve embedded below. The footage has been recorded off a screen, so the quality is not representative of the final game being played on your TV.

FIFA 18 on Switch – What’s Included and What’s Missing?

FIFA 18 on Switch was properly detailed at EA Play 2017, with EA stating that the Switch game will include the following game modes:

  • FIFA Ultimate Team
  • Career Mode
  • Kick Off
  • Women’s International Cup
  • Skill Games
  • Local Seasons

Ultimate Team on Switch will include Squad Building Challenges, Online and Offline Seasons, Tournaments, and Draft.

Features from FIFA 18 PS4/Xbox One/PC that aren’t in FIFA 18 on Switch:

  • Frostbite Engine
  • Story Mode (The Journey)
  • It’s unclear what gameplay improvements are included in FIFA 18 on Switch

If you look very carefully at the small print in the reveal trailer for FIFA 18, you can clearly see text indicating that neither the Frostbite Engine, nor the Story Mode featuring Alex Hunter, will be available in the Nintendo Switch version of the game.

This means that the Nintendo Switch version of FIFA 18 will fall more in line with the versions available for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, as neither of these versions feature the Story Mode or the Frostbite Engine. ‘The Journey‘, the Story Mode for FIFA, debuted last year in FIFA 17, following rising star Alex Hunter as he made his way through the ranks of Premier League teams. Although Alex Hunter is set to return in FIFA 18 in The Journey: Hunter Returns, he will not be making way to the Nintendo Switch, the PlayStation 3, or the Xbox 360.

“FIFA 18 on Nintendo Switch is the best FIFA you can take with you anywhere, play anytime and with anyone,” said Producer, Andrei Lăzărescu. “We’re delivering the immersive and authentic experience that fans expect from FIFA, while leveraging innovative ways to play both at home and on the go with Nintendo Switch.”

FIFA 18 players on Switch can play in docked, handheld or tabletop mode, and utilize local multiplayer connection for Local Seasons. Handheld, dual Joy-Con, single Joy-Con or Pro Controller options will be available.

Technically, FIFA 18 on Switch runs in 1080p when docked and 720p in handheld mode. Players will also be able to take part in Local Seasons across two Switch consoles.

“EA Sports’ FIFA on Nintendo Switch will be the most immersive, social, and authentic sports game ever created for Nintendo players,” Söderlund said. “It will deliver the FIFA experience custom-built for Nintendo Switch so you can play anywhere, play with anyone, and play how you want to play.”

The quality of FIFA 18 on Nintendo Switch will be a big sign of how EA will approach Switch games in the future. With the removal of the Frostbite Engine and the Story Mode for the Switch version however, it’s already beginning to look like FIFA 18 on the Nintendo Switch isn’t a priority for EA.

FIFA 18 Switch Gameplay Footage

Our friends at Eurogamer have recorded a video of FIFA 18 being played on Nintendo Switch. In the video Eurogamer Deputy Editor Wesley Yin-Poole plays FIFA 18 on Switch and gives his initial impressions of the game.

What do we Want From FIFA 18? A Lot Needs to Change

FIFA 17 made the jump from the Ignite Engine to Frostbite, but in terms of gameplay and visuals there wasn’t the massive leap that might have been expected. Sure, the lighting was improved and we got more impressive shots of the stadiums (plus all the areas featured in The Journey), but player likenesses were still a bit hit and miss. Now the dev team is au fait with the game engine, perhaps we’ll see bigger strides taken in the move from FIFA 17 to FIFA 18.

FIFA 18 will be massive, but there’s a lot EA could do to improve on FIFA 17

  • Improved Penalties – The new penalty system in FIFA 17 took a lot of getting used to, but after many hours it finally showed itself to be not awful. There’s still a lot of improving to be done here, so hopefully EA will refine it rather than cut its losses and revert to the tried and tested, but rather dull system of old.
  • Corner System Changes – The way corners worked in FIFA 17 often made it feel like you had your hands tied over the outcome. There was lots of options but FIFA 18 needs to make the player feel like they’re in control again.
  • Defending Still Isn’t Right – Defending in FIFA over the last few years has been a massive point of contention. Tactical Defending can be learnt but it’s incredibly hard to get good enough to entirely close out a team, meaning the best form of defense was to attack and outscore opponents. The defending of old feels rather dated now, but the new system isn’t right either.
  • The Journey 2 – What EA is going to do with its follow-up to the surprisingly engaging and successful FIFA story mode is one of the biggest mysteries surrounding FIFA 18. Will the story continue with Hunter (FIFA 17’s story ended after a single season) or will EA try something new? Another origin story, starting with a youngster and following through to a pro career would seem lazy, so focusing on Hunter hitting the big time would make sense.
  • Manager Likenesses – One standout feature (and not in a good way) in FIFA 17 was the manager likenesses, especially during The Journey. Their faces and animations simply weren’t good enough and need a big improvement in FIFA 18.
  • Sort Out The Voice Acting – The Journey in FIFA 17 got away with a lot due to the mode being inside a football sim. Had we been witnessing the voice acting and script in a proper adventure game, it would have been decimated by press and fans. More natural dialogue is needed and included pros need some lessons in how to deliver lines.

FIFA 18 is releasing on September 29 for PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox 360 and PS3.
