Sam Barlow’s Her Story [$3.99] was a remarkable game that made FMV (Full Motion Video) games cool again and received a ton of awards, and now Barlow is developing another FMV game called Telling Lies, which will take the original recipe and expand it in pretty much every way. In a recent interview, Barlow talked about how Telling Lies will follow the same interactive-movie format as Her Story but will have a much more involved narrative and higher production values. They are even hoping to get Hollywood actors and actresses involved with the project.
Telling Lies won’t be a sequel to Her Story, and it will include multiple characters (probably 3 or 4) and a story that takes notes from political thrillers like Francis Ford Copolla’s 1974 The Conversation. Barlow’s taking inspiration from movies that explored the intersection of government, society, and individuals, themes that are definitely very topical right now. The game is still pretty far into the future—shooting won’t start before the end of 2017 at the earliest—and it will be created in collaboration with Annapurna Interactive, which recently released Giant Sparrow’s remarkable What Remains of Edith Finch. I don’t know about you, but I’m excited.
