Star Wars’ new AR headset lets you be a Jedi, play Holochess

Disney and Lenovo are bringing Star Wars into augmented reality

Lenovo and Disney have teamed up to develop their own proprietary headset for augmented reality.

The new AR headset promises to bring Star Wars to life with new exclusive games. At the D23 Expo in Anaheim, Disney showed a short video featuring the game’s concepts, including massive ground battles involving soldiers and AT-ATs. Like Samsung’s Gear VR, the headset will require a smartphone to work.

Disney also announced that Holochess, the game seen played onboard the Millennium Falcon by Chewbacca and C-3PO in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, will be recreated for the AR headset. True fans know that Holochess is just a catch-all term for holographic games in the Star Wars universe and the game they played in the film is actually called Dejarik, but that’s neither here nor there.

The first game to come to the new headset will be Star Wars Jedi Challenges. The game will utilize a motion controller made to look like the lightsaber used by Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker, and now Rey in the main saga films.

Disney did not announce a release date for the headset or Jedi Challenges just yet, but the game’s website states that it is “coming soon to Best Buy and”
