Star Wars: The Last Jedi closes out 2017 with a cool billion, and it hasn’t opened in China

Still a ways to go before it overtakes The Force Awakens, though

It took three weeks, but Star Wars: The Last Jedi has grossed more than a billion in revenue — worldwide — to close out 2017. And it hasn’t yet premiered in China.

Box Office Mojo estimates the film’s foreign (non-North America) haul is $523 million, the bulk of that coming from the United Kingdom ($67 million). The domestic take is $517 million.

In gross receipts, 32 movies have grossed more than $1 billion worldwide. Disney owns 13 of them. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is currently 24th.

Other worldwide billion-earners this year include Beauty and the Beast ($1.26 billion) The Fate of the Furious ($1.23 billion) and Despicable Me 3 ($1.03 billion). But the fact none of the others are still in distribution, and The Last Jedi has yet to see its China premiere, means the flick will probably overtake all of the 2017 launches soon into next year.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is already close to surpassing Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ($1.06 billion, last year) in revenue. The last numbered Star Wars move, The Force Awakens, raked in $2.07 billion, third place all time, after its December 2015 premiere

In domestic receipts, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is 2017’s winner, $517 million to Beauty and the Beast’s $504 million and Wonder Woman’s $412 million.
