Super Mario Odyssey Adds 2 New Costumes

Nintendo takes us back to the ’90s with Mario’s Satellaview costume.

Mario’s wardrobe is getting updated again, with a baseball uniform and a somewhat obscure reference to Nintendo’s Japanese Super Famicom add-on, the Satellaview outfit.

Satellaview was a satellite modem that allowed players to download games to their console during a specific time slot using the satellite radio service of Nintendo’s then-partner, St. GIGA. It was released in Japan in 1995. You can watch Mario floating around in space in the Japanese commercial for it right here.

The outfits are amongst those dug up by dataminers in the Luigi’s Balloon World update, which included Broodal costumes, as well as Santa and zombie outfits.

We talked about the uncovered costumes and more in episode 397 of our Nintendo Voice Chat show. You can skip ahead to the four minute mark to get down to the nitty gritty.

You can check out the costumes and the original ad for Satellaview below.
