WoW Player Gets a Year in Prison for Blizzard DDoS Attack

WoW. That’s a pretty hefty punishment.

A World of Warcraft player has been fined and sentenced to a year in prison after carrying out a DDoS attack on Blizzard’s servers.

GamesIndustry.biz reports that Calin Mateias was extradited to the US from his home country of Romania last year to face federal charges after his 2010 DDoS attack. Mateias plead guilty in February and has already paid $30,000 to Blizzard in compensation.

Mateias was apparently “motivated by a juvenile desire to win the game, and for others to lose it” and was embroiled in a dispute with his fellow players.

“Angered by a player he regularly competed against, the defendant determined to defeat his WoW opponents by interrupting the game’s server so they could not access the game,” read the defence sentencing memorandum. He was sentenced earlier this week.

Blizzard’s servers have come under attack since Mateias’ attempt, with the hacking group Lizard Squad launching a DDoS attack in 2016 that disabled all games powered by Battle.net.
