Battlefield 5 will not have loot boxes, will sell cosmetic items

This time around there’s no randomized paid loot

Battlefield 5 was revealed today during a special livestreamed event by developer EA DICE and publisher Electronic Arts. But one controversial subject was not mentioned, and that’s loot boxes.

Asked for comment, an EA spokesperson told Polygon that there will not be loot boxes in Battlefield 5. That’s consistent with themes shared during the reveal event and at a pre-briefing delivered to the press earlier this week. Battlefield 5 will completely divorce gameplay progression from cosmetic unlocks. Gameplay unlocks will only be available to be earned through play, while cosmetic items will have no gameplay effects.

The spokesperson also told Polygon that cosmetic items will be available for purchase through in-game currency (which is earned through play) as well as real-money transactions. At least some of that sweet cosmetic gear will be sold online, although whether all of it will be available through in-game currency remains to be seen.

Battlefield 5 is expected to launch simultaneously on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. An early trial of the game will be available to Origin and EA Access members on Oct. 11. The deluxe edition of the game will unlock on Oct. 16, with the standard edition coming out on Oct. 19.
