Mojang’s Scrolls goes free-to-play and gets a new name

It’s ‘Caller’s Bane’ from now on

Scrolls, the collectible card game from Minecraft maker Mojang, is going free-to-play, the developer announced, and it’s also getting a new name.

Going forward, the game is now Caller’s Bane. A post from Mojang did not explain the reason for the name change, cryptically mentioning, “Perhaps we just didn’t like the sound of ‘Scrolls.’

“Either way,” said Mojang’s Måns Olson, “it’s still the same game you’ve known and loved.”

There’s more on the game’s official website.

Many remember Scrolls as a project announced by Mojang in 2011, as Minecraft was in beta and its popularity was already soaring. However, ZeniMax Media, owners of Bethesda Softworks and its Elder Scrolls trademarks, filed a suit challenging Mojang’s application for a Scrolls trademark.

The suit was settled in 2012; under its terms, ZeniMax licensed the “Scrolls” mark to Mojang for use in it is game, and Mojang gave up any trademark claim to it. A Bethesda Softworks representative reached by Polygon was unaware if that licensing agreement was indefinite or time-limited. Other terms of the settlement weren’t disclosed at the time, other than that Mojang could not use “Scrolls” on a sequel to the game.

Mojang was sold to Microsoft in September 2015 for $2.5 billion; Scrolls launched in December of that year after more than 18 months in beta.
