Dead Cells has some great options if you have dietary restrictions

For all the players who define their diet as “monster”

Dead Cells is one of the best 2D games we’ve played in the past few years, and it’s often the little details that show the level of care put into this kind of release. One of my favorite parts of the game is a simple one: You get to select the sort of healing food that is dropped while you play, and the options are fun.

Depending on your mood, you can choose between:

  • Carnivore
  • Castlevaniaesque
  • Vegetarian
  • Fruitarian
  • Monster
  • Baguette

If you decide that you’re tired of eating bread at any point in your game, you can switch things over to eating eyeballs. Your dietary options can be changed at any point in the game.

Fruitarian and vegetarian are self-explanatory; they’re for the adventurer who just can’t stomach eating any kind of flesh, while carnivore is the opposite. Castlevaniaesque mirrors the food options of the game from which Dead Cells takes so much inspiration, and monster gives you chunks of … things. Baguette is bread.

Is this an important detail? No, neither does it do much to change the game. But it’s the kind of amusing, irrelevant feature that helps give a game flavor. It also communicates the fact that Dead Cells is very aware of how beholden it is to past games and how little it cares about appearing to be silly.

And now, I’d like to formally apologize for that flavor pun.
