Jump Force will let you create your own custom character

If you’re a fan of the art style of Jump Force, the upcoming fighting game featuring characters from Dragon Ball, Naruto, One Piece, Death Note and other Shonen Jump manga series, publisher Bandai Namco has some good news: You’ll be able to create your own character for the game.

That’s not uncommon for Bandai Namco’s anime and manga-inspired video games; the publisher let players create their own custom Dragon Ball characters in the Dragon Ball Xenoverse games, for example. But given the particular aesthetic of Jump Force, which employs a semi-realistic yet still cartoonish art style that has divided some fans, it’s going to create some interesting opportunities.

During a presentation at Bandai Namco’s headquarters in Tokyo, the publisher offered a peek at a custom female avatar modeled after One Piece’s Monkey D. Luffy. She’s wearing his familiar straw hat, shirt and facial scar.

That teaser raised the question about how extensive Jump Force’s character creator will be. So we asked, “will players be able to create their own avatar in the style of Dragon Ball, Naruto, Yu-Gi-Oh, Hunter x Hunter and the rest of Jump Force’s other licensed characters?” A representative for Bandai Namco wouldn’t confirm whether that was the case when we asked, but a trio of pre-order incentive items hinted at costumes based on Dragon Ball’s Frieza, Naruto’s Hokage and One Piece’s Gol D. Roger, so it looks like a very real possibility. That means you could potentially make your own female version of Yugi Muto with disturbingly realistic fleshy hands in Jump Force when the game comes to PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One in 2019.

What’s more, Jump Force will have a handful of original characters of its own, designed by Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama. According to Bandai Namco, those new characters — J Force director Glover and the android known as Navigator, as well as villains Galena and Kane — will play an integral role in Jump Force’s story.

A new trailer featuring Toriyama’s original creations for Jump Force can be seen below.
