After four years in development, Return of the Obra Dinn launches next week

The next game from the creator of Papers, Please

Return of the Obra Dinn — the next game from Papers, Please creator Lucas Pope — has a launch date. It arrives Oct. 18 for Windows PC and Mac via Steam, GOG.com and Humble Bundle.

Pope bills Return of the Obra Dinn as “an insurance adventure with minimal color,” nodding to the low-res, digitized visuals of Macintosh adventure games in the late 1980s. In the game, players take on the role of an insurance company investigator piecing together the fate of the Obra Dinn, a ship in the East India Company.

What we know is that the game is set in 1807, when a ghost ship called Obra Dinn shows up in port five years after it had gone missing. Players must investigate what happened to every crew member on board.

Pope says the game has two endings: a bad ending that delivers about three hours of playtime, and a good ending that can take anywhere from six to 40 hours.

Return of the Obra Dinn has been in development since 2014. Pope began work on it shortly after Papers, Please launched to widespread critical acclaim.
