Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has a new adventure mode, World of Light, that’s a lot different from those of games past. While this has a story, much like Subspace Emissary did, don’t expect it to be much like that plot-heavy (if you can call it that) campaign. Instead, adventure mode serves to explain how the spirits of Spirits Mode came to be.
A trailer ending the Nintendo Direct dedicated to the game is extremely anxiety-inducing … because all of our favorite characters die, basically, after being attacked by a series of Master Hands.
Except! For! Kirby! Kirby is the lone hold-out, which means he has to help recover all 73 other fighters. The bad news is that they’re all possessed in their unconscious forms, which gives Kirby a huge role. Of course, he won’t be totally alone for the entire campaign, but he’s going to have to win his co-competitors back before we can take over for them.
This is looking like the most intense Kirby game maybe ever.

The spirits of Spirits Mode will also populate the campaign, which is full of a bunch of other stuff that we’re stoked for, including skill trees. Skill trees! The whole storyline explains what’s up with them, after all; why did they all become these non-playable allies? We’ll find out.
The best part of the World of Light trailer was a vocal-version of the classic Super Smash Bros. theme music. It rocks.
