negaoryx was doing a ‘blind’ Zelda run
Have you ever played a game for hours or days, only to find a technique, weapon or option tucked away in a labyrinthine menu that radically changes how you play the game, or makes it instantly easier? It can be a welcome feeling, realizing that a difficult task is now made trivial. But it can be equally infuriating, knowing that the hours behind you have been ground out doing unnecessary work.
Twitch streamer negaoryx recently experienced that feeling, only more intensely and publicly, in a streamed playthrough of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. She’d already racked up more than 95 hours of playtime and felled three of the game’s Divine Beasts, and then she found the advanced combat tutorial.
In a Twitch stream from earlier this month, deep into the game, negaoryx worked her way back toward Kakariko Village and stumbled upon the Ta’Loh Naeg Shrine. It’s here that players — well, most players — learn “crucial” movement and combat techniques like the side hop, backflip, parry, flurry rush and charged attack. Those are useful techniques, but clearly not essential, as proven by negaoryx’s playthrough of Breath of the Wild. Watching her realize that she could have been using these moves during her run is a little bit heartbreaking, but it’s also delightful, as she handles the shock of it all gracefully.
She recently tweeted out her eye-opening moment with a highlight clip of her tutorial discovery, a tweet which has picked up a ton of traction.
Have you ever sunk 95+ hours into a game before coming back to the starting zone and accidentally stumbling into the tutorial?

As her viewers pointed out in chat and on Twitter, it’s a testament to her skill in the game, as she overcame difficult portions of Breath of the Wild without those combat tools in her kit. It’s similarly a testament to the design of Breath of the Wild, which often lets players tackle challenges in their own way through creative solutions.
negaoryx was doing a “blind” playthrough of the game, meaning she wasn’t using guides, walkthroughs or hints from her viewers to aid her on her journey. She also copped to not being much of a Zelda fan prior to playing through Breath of the Wild. If you want to watch negaoryx’s journey through a Zelda game, with and without the teachings of Ta’Loh Naeg, you can do so at her Twitch channel.
