Retail copies of Fallout 76 are not being pulled in preparation for the game going free-to-play.

Rumours began circulating following a video from YouTuber TheQuartering who presented a number of instances of the Standard Edition of Fallout being unavailable on Australian retailer EB Games’ website and having notably low stock on Amazon.com.

In the video, he speculates that the game could be going free-to-play, with the video description reading, “Someone reached out to me from EB Games in Australia and mentioned the game was likely to go free to play.”

After gathering momentum on Reddit, one player asked the developer outright on Twitter about this rumour, saying they would want a refund if the there was any truth to claims.

Bethesda responded, tweeting, “There is no truth to this rumor,” nipping this in the bud fairly quickly, which is wise given the potential it could have had to further anger the community.

Fallout 76 had a rocky launch, with problems both in-game and with the physical product itself.

As well as a number of bugs, the company leaked players’ personal information following a support glitch.

There was also the issue of the $200 Power Armor Edition shipping with an alternative bag to the one that was advertised, without notifying customers of the change.

The publisher has since promised to replace the nylon bags with the originally promised canvas version.

In other news, if you logged into the game at all last year on PC or console, you can claim the Fallout Classic Collection for free.
