An internal email shows that Phil Spencer feels good about the future of gaming at Microsoft
Yesterday Google unveiled Stadia, a new gaming platform based entirely in the cloud. The technology giant’s decision to forego a traditional console has apparently delighted Microsoft’s Phil Spencer, head of the Xbox gaming team. In an internal memo, Spencer calls Google’s announcement a “validation.” He goes on to promise big news at this year’s E3 in Los Angeles.
The complete memo, which was published by Thurrott, indicates that the leader of the Xbox team feels like his group is in a good position to take the search giant head on.
“Today we saw a big tech competitor enter the gaming market,” Spencer wrote, “and frame the necessary ingredients for success as Content, Community and Cloud. There were no big surprises in their announcement […] But I want get back to us, there has been really good work to get us to the position where we are poised to compete for 2 billion gamers across the planet. Google went big today and we have a couple of months until E3 when we will go big.”
Microsoft’s own cloud-based solution, called xCloud, was announced just last October. It will also allow players to experience AAA-quality games on multiple devices using little more than an internet connection. It’s expected to be a centerpiece of Xbox’s E3 presentation, which takes place some time in June.
