The psychic-type Lake Trio all have the same counters
The Lake Trio, Azelf, Mesprit, and Uxie, are making their rounds in Pokémon Go tier five raids in specific regions.
Azelf is in the Americas and Greenland, Uxie is in the Asia-Pacific region, and Mesprit is in Europe, the Middle East, India, and Africa.
The three Pokémon are all psychic-type, which means they have the same counters. For all three of them, you will want to bring out your strongest ghost-, bug-, and dark-type Pokémon. The following work as very good counters:
- Origin Forme Giratina with Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball
- Gengar with Shadow Claw (Legacy) or Hex and Shadow Ball
- Tyrannitar with Bite and Crunch
- Mewtwo with Psycho Cut and Shadow Ball (Legacy)
- Houndoom with Snarl and Foul Play
- Honchkrow with Snarl and Dark Pulse
Bug-types like Scizor and Pinsir will do fine against the Lake Trio, with the exception of when Azelf has Fire Blast. Similarly, Giratina will struggle against Mesprit with Blizzard. Note that Gengar and Mewtwo’s moveset listed includes legacy moves, meaning they’re not obtainable anymore. Gengar will do fine with any of his other movesets (like Hex and Shadow Ball) as long as it’s supporting type-based counters, but Mewtwo isn’t too hot against the Lake Trio without Shadow Ball.
The most important thing is to line up your Pokémon’s moves with the target’s weakness. Azelf and Mesprit are on the squishier side and can be taken down in smaller groups, with higher leveled players able to duo Azelf. Uxie is a bit tankier and will require more people, but still should be easy with at least seven or eight raiders.
Once you catch them all three of the Legendaries have the same preferred moveset: Confusion with Future Sight. Mesprit and Azelf should ditch Blizzard and Fire Blast, respectively, as there are much better ice-type and fire-type attackers out there who also utilize same type attack bonus. Uxie can keep Thunder without significantly losing out on DPS, but Future Sight remains a better pick.
