‘I don’t think we’re in the ’90s anymore’

Netflix released what is presumably the last trailer for Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling, the long-anticipated revival of the former Nickelodeon cartoon series. The film, which hits Netflix on Aug. 9, ending the series’ 20-plus-year-long hiatus.

After spending two decades floating around in space, Rocko and his friends return to a technologically advanced O-Town and set out to get his favorite program back on the air. The trailer shows some of the challenges of adjusting to the 21st century: Rocko’s friends are obsessed with the newest smart phone models while Rocko himself seems to be perpetually caught in an adverse relationship with technology. This plays into the film’s central message. Series creator Joe Murray told Polygon in 2017 that the story will examine how we’ve become “slaves” to technology and social media.

The film was originally supposed to air on Nickelodeon proper and was initially slated for a 2018 release. However, the company sold the rights to Netflix in May, along with the rights for another Nickelodeon revival, Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus.
