Fans begin rallying behind #SaveTheOA
Sci-fi drama The OA has been canceled after two seasons at Netflix. The series, which premiered in 2016 and released a second season this past March, was created by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij.
The OA focused on Prairie Johnson (Brit Marling), a previously blind adopted woman who disappears for seven years only to return with her sight restored and scars on her back. Upon her return, she dubs herself the “Original Angel” — the “OA,” for short — and confesses her story to a group of mostly teenagers. The series was chock full of mind-bending moments and subplots ranging from underground experimentation to dimensional travel.
The series isn’t the only recent Netflix cancellation — Netflix canceled internet favorite Tuca & Bertie after one season; it also canceled beloved sitcom One Day at a Time, citing low viewership, before it was picked up by Pop TV. The streaming platform typically doesn’t release viewing numbers, but has previously taken them into account when it comes time for renewal decisions. Fans of The OA have begun to rally behind the hashtag #SaveTheOA in the hopes of encouraging another platform to pick up the series or Netflix to reconsider.
