Mario Kart Tour adds Pauline to the racing roster

The mayor of Super Mario Odyssey’s New Donk City joins the race

Mario Kart Tour, Nintendo’s free-to-play kart racing game for mobile devices, officially launches on Sept. 25, and will feature a brand-new addition to the Mario Kart roster: Pauline.

Pauline is, of course, the Mario series’ original damsel-in-distress character. She debuted in arcade game Donkey Kong, but in Mario Kart Tour, she’ll appear in the form many people are more recently familiar with: as the mayor of New Donk City from Super Mario Odyssey. A new trailer for Mario Kart Tour offers a peek at Pauline in action and a primer about how the mobile kart racer plays.

Pauline will be available in Mario Kart Tour as part of the game’s first city-based event, which focuses on New York City. Joining her as a limited-time exclusive will be Musician Mario — another Super Mario Odyssey reference. Both characters will have special powers: Musician Mario can fire two Bob-ombs at once, while Pauline can use the Lucky 7 item.

Mario Kart Tour is scheduled to go live around 1 a.m. PT/4 a.m. ET on Sept. 25. Nintendo notes that players “may be able to download the app from the App Store or Google Play Store before then, but the game won’t be playable until the launch time.”
