‘Every major iteration’ of Dead Cells now playable on Steam
Action-platformer Dead Cells has been updated yet again by developers Motion Twin and Evil Empire, adding new gameplay elements and tweaking others. But if you’re the type of Dead Cells player that resists change (or is simply nostalgic for the early days of Dead Cells), the developers have a nice surprise for you: The Legacy Update.
The Legacy Update will make every previous “major iteration” of Dead Cells available to play, if you’d like to revisit an older build of the game.
“The Legacy Update is something that we’ve been wanting to do for a long time,” Evil Empire and Motion Twin said in an update posted to Steam. “As we moved towards regular updates and iterations on the game, we were always bugged by the fact that we were drastically changing the experience that a lot of people had come to love (something that you all have [vocally] reminded us of on occasion).”
According to the developers, “every major iteration of the game” includes the original build released on Steam Early Access “right up to present, and we will of course make sure that we stock all of our future major updates in there too.”
“As dedicated as we have been and remain to growing and refining Dead Cells, we’ve heard from select community members mourning the loss of their personal favorite elements from prior builds,” said Joan Blachere, creative director at Evil Empire, in a press release. “Our goal with the Legacy Update is to help veteran fans rediscover their favorite moments from Dead Cells’ expansive build archive while letting curious newcomers explore what’s led to the version familiar to them. Giving the gift of time travel while still keeping future updates available to everyone is about as close to a Christmas miracle as we can get.”
The update, released on Monday, also adds two new mutations, rebalancing for the three least-used weapons in the game, and a Santa Claus skin just in time for Christmas.
