Boundary Break unlocks the camera and shows what’s really going on in Respawn’s adventure
The latest episode of YouTube’s Boundary Break detaches the camera from Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and shows everyone what’s going on behind Oz’s curtain. Some of it is just simply the way programmers, designers and modelers manage resources for the sake of efficiency, but there are a few secrets that will raise an eyebrow or two.
The AT-AT sequence is a good example of how Respawn Entertainment managed the seamless scene changes that make Fallen Order feel so cinematic even as you’re playing through it. The real highlight, though, is a left-over object buried on the Kashyyyk level, which says METROIDVANIA TEST STAY CALM.
But there’s also a journey into the center of a Sarlacc from the game’s first chapter, if you’re wondering what Boba Fett’s last thoughts were before being dragged to his death by the galaxy’s largest hemorrhoid. It can seem arbitrary, the detail that Respawn designers chose to put into some inaccessible places of the game, while only roughly sketching birds, NPC spectators and others elsewhere. That speaks either to plans or story direction that later changed, or just artists having fun when they could.
Either way, it’s a neat look inside a title that got Star Wars back on the video game map in a big and unexpected way. Shesez, the YouTuber behind the Boundary Break video series, always comes up with some good looks inside big-name games — at the end of 2018 he found a lot of interesting things inside Fallout 3. And in April, Shesez showed how side-scrolling platformer Shovel Knight is in fact a 3D game.
