The coronavirus impact on the 2020 movie release schedule continues
Pixar’s Soul — originally set for a June release — has been pushed to November 20, taking the spot originally reserved for Disney Animation’s Raya and the Last Dragon. Raya, meanwhile, has been bumped to a March 12, 2021 release. Disney previously shifted around release dates for its live-action features, including the Mulan remake and the upcoming Marvel movies Black Widow and The Eternals due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Theaters worldwide have shut down in order to comply with social-distancing guidelines. Pixar’s latest film, Onward, did poorly at the box office before being pulled from theaters entirely and dropping on the streaming service Disney Plus. Some studios have opted to cancel their upcoming theatrical releases entirely and send their films directly to streaming, as Universal did with Trolls World Tour. Disney will release its upcoming Artemis Fowl movie directly on Disney Plus, but big titles like Mulan, Soul, and Black Widow have instead been pushed to different theatrical windows.
Soul explores the concept of what makes life worth living, and ponders deep existential questions within its very first trailers. Raya and the Last Dragon, from Crazy Rich Asians screenwriter Adele Lim, is a Southeast Asian fairytale about the importance of community.
