Bomberman on Switch just got some great, weird new characters

Super Bomberman R for Nintendo Switch got a big update today that adds a new game mode, some gameplay tweaks and a bunch of new characters, including some unexpected cameos from Silent Hills’ freakish nurses and Princess Tomato. You know, from the Salad Kingdom.

First though, the Switch game’s new Grand Prix battle mode offers a new way to play. Here are the rules, via Konami’s patch notes for Super Bomberman R’s version 2.0 update.

The Grand Prix mode offers the following new features from normal battles.

Each battle is 2 rounds and the team with the most total points wins.

Each character has different power-ups.

When you lose a life in the Grand Prix mode, you are resurrected after a certain time instead of turning into a Miso Bomb.

Soft blocks will start falling after a certain time has elapsed.

Players can choose from one of two gameplay styles: Crystal, in which players fight to collect crystals on each stage, or Basic Bomber, where victory is decided by defeating the enemy team. Grand Prix mode supports up to six Nintendo Switch consoles in network battles.

There are 10 new playable characters, including familiar faces like Dracula from Castlevania, Jehuty from Zone of the Enders and Goemon, the mystical ninja. Konami also went a little deeper into its catalog (and Hudson’s) for some unexpected new Bombers. There’s Reiko from Rumble Roses, Shiori Fujisaki from Tokemeki Memorial, a pair of Bombers with Gradius options for heads and Princess Tomato from Hudson Soft’s Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom. And there are Bubble Heads from Silent Hill.

Check out some of the new Bombers in the gallery below. Details on each are at the Super Bomberman R website.

Those new characters join previously released Konami characters Simon Belmont, Vic Viper and Pyramid Head as playable Bombers in Super Bomberman R.
