Marvel’s big summer crossover, The War of the Realms, has been stressful for everyone, but especially for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. In this week’s Avengers, War of the Realms architect Jason Aaron gives the team some time to decompress — which is to say, Thor and Iron Man start the naked hot tub party and things proceed from there.

Bendis, Walker, and Campbell’s Naomi has been an absolute delight, a strong story with absolutely arresting art. I’m very glad it’ll be getting a second arc and can’t wait to see what happens next with its characters.

Wonder Woman #74

G. Willow Wilson, Xermanico/DC Comics

The Amazons are back????? Gone missing since 2016, if G. Willow Wilson and her collaborators don’t spin this around in further plot twists, it looks like Wonder Woman might get a long, long awaited reunion with her sisters.

Wonder Twins #6

Mark Russell, Stephen Byrne/Marvel Comics

I’m not giving you any context for this, I’m just telling you that Wonder Twins is a fun comic with things to say.

Young Justice #7

Brian Michael Bendis, John Timms/DC Comics

Young Justice is also a very fun comic, that is taking its sweet time before it finally reveals what exactly is inside of Jonah Hex’s box.

Batman Universe #1

Brian Michael Bendis, Nick Derington/DC Comics

The Batman TV series made sound effects synonymous with the lowbrow, and that does them a disservice. Look at Nick Derington’s brilliant work here, flicking between the onomotopoeic FIZZZZZ and SPLAK and the more abstract SLICE. Chef kiss.

Bad Weekend

Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips/Image Comics

Ed Brubaker is the undisputed king of crime comics, and in Bad Weekend he tells the story of a comic book crime. Even I learned a few things about comics history by looking up some of the stories in this book. A solid read if you’re into that sort of thing, collected for the first time here.

Gogor #3

Ken Garing/Image Comics

I want everyone I know to read Ken Garing’s Gogor. It’s Jim Henson, Hayao Miyazaki, Jeff Smith, and Jack Kirby all in one package.
