The MCU ensemble is joining Jeffrey Wright’s The Watcher
Marvel Studios’ San Diego Comic-Con panel was a marathon of Phase 4 release dates, details, and surprises. Along with the slew of MCU films announced (Black Widow! Thor 4! Dr. Strange 2!), the studio also announced a slate of original streaming programming that will debut on Disney Plus, which launches this November. The most exciting might be the studio’s first animated MCU venture, What If…?. An anthology based on the infamous comic line, the series will focus on alternate reality tales running parallel to the MCU.
Marvel recently released the full cast list for What If…?, which brings in major MCU names like Chris Hemsworth, Josh Brolin, and Chadwick Boseman. The series will unite a hefty cast of MCU actors under the careful eye of Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) as The Watcher, a celestial observer who occasionally meddles in terrestrial happenings.

The big mystery is whether What If…? will draw from the comics or go incompletely new directions provided by the lore of the MCU. Premises featured in the past 40 years of What If…? comics include “What If… Captain America and Bucky Had Both Survived World War II?” “What If Loki Found Thor’s Hammer First? “What if the Hulk had reverted to Bruce Banner when he crashed on Sakaar?” and “What If Thanos Joined the Avengers?”
We’ll know exactly what the true watcher of the MCU, Kevin Feige, is cooking up when What If…? premiere in summer 2021. For now, we’ll just be content getting Michael B. Jordan back as Killmonger.
